Geloof

‘There are facts, and there are beliefs, and there are things you want so badly to believe that they become as facts to you’.

Julie Beck, een redacteur van The Atlantic, ging op 13 maart in op het verschijnsel dat ‘geloven dat iets waar is’ een belangrijke rol speelt bij de ontkenning van ‘undeniable facts’. In de psychologie wordt dat cognitieve dissonantie genoemd, de spanning die ontstaat bij het horen van feiten of opvattingen of het vertonen van gedrag, strijdig met eigen overtuigingen, waarden en normen.

De sociaal-psycholoog Leon Festinger beschreef dit verschijnsel, samen met zijn collega’s Henry Riecken en Stanley Schachter, al in 1957 in When Prophesy Fails. Dat boek begint met de regel dat ‘A man with a conviction is a hard man to change. Tell him you disagree and he turns away. Show him facts or figures and he questions your sources. Appeal to logic and he fails to see your point’.
